Artist Statement

As an artist and a maker I am interested in exploring the notion of tension and how it materializes in our social environment. Within my work I explore what seem to be opposing and contradictory elements in our social world by taking up the notion of tension as having both constructive and destructive possibilities.

Through the act of quilt making and the use of nature based dyes, I draw on the history of socially engaged quilt makers which positions quilts and quilted objects as both functional items of comfort as well as edgy pieces of political expression. The medium lends itself to acknowledging the presence of tension as something that can both hold us together as well as an element that fixes us in one place, binding us in a restricting manner.
